What are dimples?
Dimples are indentations that appear on the cheeks when a person smiles. They are commonly located on the lower cheek, near the lips.
Not everyone is born with dimples. They form naturally due to an indentation in the dermis (the middle layer of the skin) caused by facial muscles contracting more deeply when the mouth pulls into a smile.
How is a dimple creation procedure whether via stitching or surgery performed?
The plastic surgeon will manually create a small opening in the skin of your cheek to initiate the dimple. Subsequently, the doctor will remove a small amount of cheek muscle and fat to create a more natural and symmetrical indentation, typically to a depth of about 2–3 millimeters.
After preparing the space for the dimple, the doctor will place sutures connecting one side of the cheek muscle to the other. Finally, the sutures will be tied to permanently secure the dimple's position.
How long is the recovery period?
Recovery from dimple surgery or the dimple creation procedure is typically relatively quick.
The treated area of the cheek may experience some mild swelling following the procedure; however, applying a cold compress can help reduce it. The swelling usually resolves on its own within a few days.
The surgeon will schedule a follow-up appointment one week after the procedure to assess the results.
