What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure to enhance the appearance of the labia (vaginal lips). This surgery may be performed to correct labial deformities, address health concerns, or for aesthetic reasons.

The labia are external female reproductive organs consisting of two pairs of skin folds: the labia majora and the labia minora. The labia majora are the folds that become covered with pubic hair after puberty.

Meanwhile, the labia minora are located just inside the labia majora, surrounding the vaginal opening and the urethral opening. The shape of the labia varies from woman to woman, and there is no standard definition of what constitutes an ideal or normal shape.

Objectives and Indications for Labiaplasty

Purpose and Indications for Labiaplasty
The labia may be enlarged or asymmetrical due to several factors, such as:
  • Genetics
  • Rapid growth during puberty
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Menopause

If the size or appearance of the labia causes discomfort, labiaplasty may be considered. The following conditions are factors that might lead one to consider labiaplasty:

  • Recurring discomfort, pain, or irritation during physical activity or exercise
  • Reduced athletic performance due to pain or irritation in the labia
  • Frequent twisting, pinching, or snagging of the labia, interfering with sexual intercourse
  • Frequent urinary tract infections, as enlarged labia are harder to clean and more prone to bacterial growth
  • Enlargement of the labia minora, causing them to protrude beyond the labia majora
  • Visible protrusion of enlarged labia when wearing swimwear or tight clothing, leading to a loss of self-confidence

Before Labiaplasty Once the labiaplasty has been scheduled, there are several things patients need to keep in mind leading up to the surgery, including:

  • Stop or reduce the dosage of blood-thinning medication as advised by the doctor, at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Avoid waxing or using hair removal creams on the pubic area for at least a few days before surgery.
  • Shave pubic hair as instructed by the doctor.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty Procedure

The initial step involves a consultation with the plastic surgeon to discuss your goals for the labiaplasty and the desired outcome.

Prior to surgery, patients must complete certain preparations, such as discontinuing the use of medications that could interfere with the healing process.

During the labiaplasty procedure, the plastic surgeon removes excess tissue from the labia to reduce their size. An anesthesiologist monitors the patient throughout the surgery to ensure comfort and safety. The procedure takes approximately two hours.

Once the surgery is complete, the plastic surgeon closes the incisions with sutures.

Post-operatively, patients must maintain hygiene in the surgical area, follow wound care instructions, and avoid activities that could disrupt the healing process.

To aid recovery, patients can take the following measures:

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity, exercise, and sexual intercourse for 4–6 weeks after surgery
  • Take pain medication prescribed by the doctor
  • Wear loose-fitting bottoms and underwear to prevent friction against the incision sites
  • Clean the sutures regularly with warm water (without soap) for one week after surgery
  • Gently cleanse the incision area after urinating or having a bowel movement
  • Use a sanitary pad if there is minor bleeding from the incision
Apply a cold compress if the incision area becomes swollen

Patients may experience pain, redness, or swelling following the labiaplasty. This may cause discomfort when sitting or urinating; however, these symptoms are normal and typically improve after two weeks. If symptoms do not improve, patients should consult their doctor.

Side Effects and Complications of Labiaplasty

As with any surgery, labiaplasty carries the risk of the following side effects and complications:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Reduced labial sensitivity
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Pain during urination or bowel
  • movements
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Choosing the Right Medical Care

Before deciding to undergo chin implant surgery, it is highly recommended to select the right clinic and plastic surgeon to ensure optimal results and safety.
